The true story behind it
The same little chef who inspired Harvey inspired this one. When my son was small, he’d “cook” with his toy kitchen, making up dishes and serving them to us. We pretended to eat every one. Walter, a wolf cooking for a big forest contest, grew straight out of that chef phase.
What happens in the story
Walter the wolf is cooking for the Forest Cooking Contest tomorrow, but his soup doesn’t taste good enough. His recipe book says he needs three rare ingredients: Glowing Mushrooms from Misty Cliff, Rainbow Fish from Rushing River and Spicy Peppers from Thorny Field. He can’t reach any of them on his own.
So Kitty and Dino go with him. At the cliff, Kitty raises stone steps and Dino cools the air to thin the fog. At the river, Kitty calms the rushing water and Dino grows water plants that draw the shiny fish in. Walter catches three and lets the rest go. In Thorny Field, Dino bends a path through the thorns, and when it closes behind them, Kitty’s wind pushes it open again.
Back at his cooking spot, Walter adds all three ingredients while Dino keeps the heat just right. The next day, Walter wins first prize, and he shares his soup with everyone.
Looking for a children’s book about wolves?
In most stories the wolf is the danger. Walter is a gray wolf in a chef’s hat with a recipe book and a big pot of soup, and the only thing he’s chasing is first prize.
It’s a nice pick for kids who love cooking or pretend kitchens. It also shows something simple and honest: Walter couldn’t do it alone, and he says so.
