The Journey of Kitty and Dino Begins
Founded by Asanga Wijeratne, this series was born from a father’s passion for storytelling, aiming to create enriching experiences for children through enchanting, magical tales.
How It All Started
When Asanga’s son turned three, he was glued to online videos like most kids today. But the family faced a challenge – the boy spoke Sinhala at home while attending an international school taught in English.
He couldn’t keep up with English, and his teachers were concerned. Their advice was clear: “No more screens.” Asanga’s wife saw the gap widening and said, “We need bedtime stories.”
Finding the Right Story
Asanga is a writer, but finding books that worked proved tougher than expected. Random English books didn’t click – the language felt too foreign, and the stories didn’t grab his son’s attention. Asanga realized he had to capture the boy’s imagination first before English would stick.
So he started writing stories just for him. Boy and dog – nothing. Boy and talking cat – a bit better. Then he noticed his son’s obsession with cats and dinosaurs. That’s when Kitty and Dino were born.
The Breakthrough
Their first book was Kitty and Dino Help Sprinkles the Cheetah – about a lonely cheetah wanting a birthday party. It worked. The next day, Asanga’s son didn’t ask for a video. He asked for another story.
From then on, the boy became Asanga’s creative partner. He’d suggest animals like the Babblers singing in their garden, which inspired Kitty and Dino Help Melody the Babbler.
From Dream to Reality: Our Story Unfolds
What started as fixing a language barrier grew into 43 books. The boy didn’t just learn English – he learned to love reading.
Now, Asanga is sharing these stories so other children can discover that same spark.
Who Is Asanga Wijeratne
A Lifelong Passion for Words
Storytelling was part of Asanga Wijeratne’s life long before Kitty and Dino showed up. As a kid, he loved playing with language, writing stories in both Sinhala and English. Even while climbing the corporate ladder, that storyteller side of him stuck around – just waiting for the right time to break out.
The Professional Pivot
Asanga spent over ten years as a Senior Executive in the apparel industry, learning discipline and management inside out. His education backs that up:
- MBA – Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK
- National Diploma in Technology (Textile) – University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka
Then in his mid-30s, Asanga made a gutsy call. He left the secure corporate world behind to chase a full-time writing career.
Writing for the World (and One Little Boy)
Asanga started freelancing and worked his way up to writing for well-known global companies. But his most important reader has always been his son.
Now he blends the discipline he learned in business with his love as a dad, creating stories that help kids – like his own son – overcome language barriers, pick up life lessons, and fall in love with reading.
The series, in short
Magical Tales of Kitty & Dino is 43 illustrated bedtime books for children ages 3 to 8. Kitty is a red cat who can move wind and water. Dino is a small green dinosaur who grows plants and heals what is hurt. In every book they help one animal with one problem, and every story carries a single gentle lesson about kindness, courage, teamwork or believing in yourself.

A lot of them come from something real that happened in our family. A rooster my father-in-law bought off a farm so it could live became Gordon the Rooster. My son begging to skip swimming lessons for a year became Penny the Penguin. A hundred-year-old tree the road was curved around rather than cut down became Otty the Deer. The very first one, about a lonely cheetah whose birthday nobody came to, was Sprinkles the Cheetah.
