What happens in the story
Thumper the rabbit finds a little bag of magic rainbow seeds near his burrow. The wise old owl told him they grow into Rainbow Wish Flowers. The catch is that they need four things: special soil, magic water, warm sunshine and cool moonlight.
Kitty and Dino take them one at a time. Dino puts plant-growing magic into the soil. Kitty lifts water in a pretty arc and lets it fall gently on the seeds. Dino moves the branches of a big tree so warm sunlight reaches the ground. Then comes the hard part. Moonlight can’t come until night, and Thumper says it himself: “But I’m not good at waiting!”
So they wait the way kids do best, with music. Kitty whistles, Dino taps on hollow logs, and Thumper sings. When the moon finally rises, the flowers open, and Thumper’s first wish is for more seeds to share with his friends.
Looking for a children’s book about rabbits?
There are plenty of rabbit books. This one is really about waiting, the part most small kids find hardest. Thumper does everything right and still has to wait for the moon.
It’s a good read for the kiddo who asks “is it time yet?” every few minutes. In the book, the answer to waiting is doing something fun together while the time passes.
