The true story behind it
My son sometimes hits a wall with something new and decides, right there, that he can’t do it. I kept coming back to the phrase people use for the impossible, ‘when pigs fly.’ We have our own version in Sinhala too, about asking a tortoise for feathers. I wanted to take that idea and turn it on its head for him. So in this story Pippin sets out to do the one thing everyone says a pig can never do. He doesn’t pull it off alone, and not by magic either, he does it with two friends and a lot of trying. The point I wanted my son to feel is simple: even pigs can fly, if you want it badly enough and you have people who will help.
What happens in the story
Pippin the pig dreams of flying like a bird, and everyone knows pigs cannot. But Kitty and Dino never tell him no. They help him stitch a big patchwork balloon, warm the air inside it, and hold their breath as it lifts off the grass. Together the three friends drift up over the farm, the trees and the river while the sky turns gold. A warm, hopeful story about teamwork and refusing to call a dream impossible.
