The true story behind it

I put riddles into some of the books on purpose, and Humphrey is one of them. I want kids to see the friends stop, think, and work something out, instead of being handed the answer.

What happens in the story

Humphrey the hedgehog has heard about strange stones all over the forest, each one carved with an old riddle. Solve them all, the story goes, and you find a hidden spring with healing water. It only appears once every hundred years, and that day is today.

So Kitty, Dino and Humphrey follow the clues. The first riddle leads to a small waterfall. The second, after Humphrey guesses “Maybe an onion or potato?”, leads to a special gold potato under the soil. The third is harder, and everyone sits down to think before they find a mossy stone at the edge of a pond.

The last riddle asks for earth, water, warmth and life, all at once. Kitty works out what it means: they have to use their powers at the same time. Up comes a sparkly fountain, and the friends fill little leaf cups to share.
